Sophia Torrijos

Operations and Grants Associate
Prior to joining the Burke Foundation, Sophia served as the Executive Director of NourishMKE, Milwaukee’s largest network of community food centers, for five years. During her tenure, she led efforts to develop and expand programming focused on food access, food waste and sustainability, and community health and wellbeing.

Before her work at NourishMKE, Sophia directed the Muskego Way Forward Initiative, providing grassroots support for resident leadership and community improvement projects in the Muskego Way and Historic Mitchell Street neighborhoods. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she has strong ties to Milwaukee’s South Side and is passionate about addressing quality-of-life issues for families throughout the city.

Sophia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in International Affairs and History from Marquette University and a Master’s in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is also a proud AmeriCorps alumna.

In her free time, Sophia enjoys exploring Milwaukee’s parks and trail system, experimenting with new recipes, and is an avid reader of fiction, non-fiction, and everything in between.
